British and American Music Events/ Albums of 1972


1972 GB MUSIC

·         Syd Barrett returns to Cambridge and fronts a trio called Stars, who struggle through a solitary official booking at the city’s Corn Exchange.
·         Derek ‘Ding Dong’ Bell, on the harp, is recruited by The Chieftains from the BBC Orchestra. He is an eccentric multi-instrumental genius who also plays the tiompan, piano and oboe. 
·         Curved Air, The Faces and Ten Years After headline at Reading Festival.
·         Alcatraz single by Kirk Houston (Noel Edmonds) is released.
·         Genesis record two radio sessions for John Peel. Roxy Music record five sessions to 1973.
·         Cherry Gillespie replaces Andi Rutherford in Pan's People. Andi has a baby and moves to Australia.
·         After working as a journalist for the East London Advertiser and spending time as a busker, Steve Harley forms Cockney Rebel.
·         Alex Harvey, 37-years-old, sees Teargas play at Arran Rock Festival. The band support Deep Purple and Trapeze, but SAHB begins.
·         Ian MacDonald joins the full-time staff of the New Musical Express, to 1975.
·         Charles Shaar Murray joins the New Musical Express from Oz. 
·         After 26 albums, John Peel closes his Dandelion record label.
·         Who is the Doctor single by Jon Pertwee is released.
·         Alan Smith is appointed by IPC as the editor of the New Musical Express. 
·         Sparks, Ron and Russell Mael, move to Britain.
·         Terry Wogan joins BBC Radio Two for the first run of his morning show, to 1985.

o        At Last, the second album by Mick Abrahams, is released on Chrysalis.   
o        Made in England by Atomic Rooster is released on Dawn. The album features Chris Farlowe on vocals and Steve Bolton on guitars.  
o        First Base, the first album by Babe Ruth, is released on Harvest.
o        Bring it Home single by Badfinger is produced by George Harrison.
o        Baby James Harvest, the fourth album by Barclay James Harvest, is released on Harvest.
o        Nurses Song with Elephants, the first album by David Bedford, is released on Dandelion.
o        Squawk the second album by Budgie is released on MCA. It includes Stranded.
o        Black Sabbath Volume 4 by Black Sabbath is released on Vertigo.
o        The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars album by David Bowie and the Spiders from Mars is released on RCA. The character is based on (i) British rocker Vince Taylor, (ii) American performer Norman Carl Odom, also known as The Legendary Stardust Cowboy, and (iii) Ziggy's clothes shop in London.
o        Captain Beyond the first album by Captain Beyond is released on Capricorn. The album contains Dancing Madly Backwards (on a Sea of Air) (4:06). 
o        Lo and Behold, the first and only album by Coulson, Dean, McGuinness, Flint (McGuinness Flint without Gallagher and Lyle), is released on Capitol.
o        Phantasmagoria, the third album by Curved Air, is released on Warner Bros.

o        Machine Head, the seventh album by Deep Purple Mk II is released on Purple Records.
o        Made in Japan, the eighth album by Deep Purple Mk II is released on Purple Records.
o        Earth Mother the second album by Lesley Duncan is released on CBS.
o        Bandstand album, including Burlesque, by Family is released.
o        Bare Trees, the eighth album by Fleetwood Mac, is released on Reprise. The line-up is Bob Welch guitar, vocals/ Danny Kirwan guitar, vocals/ Christine Perfect keyboards, vocals/ John McVie bass/ Mick Fleetwood drums.
o        Free at Last, the sixth album by Free, is released on Island.

o        Rory Gallagher Live in Europe, the third album by Rory Gallagher, is released on Polydor.
o        Gallagher and Lyle, the first album by Gallagher and Lyle, is released on A&M.
o        Foxtrot, the fourth album by Genesis, is released on Charisma. It is their first Top 20 album in the UK and gives them the confidence to play in the US. The album includes: Watcher Of the Skies with drumming which is difficult to play; Supper’s Ready, in six parts, a dark track but about salvation; Willow Farm about a Zen farm; and Apocalypse 9/8 which is improvised. The band consider themselves a non-blues based group.  
o        Acquiring the Taste, the second album by Gentle Giant, is released on Vertigo.
o        Three Friends, the third album by Gentle Giant, is released on Vertigo.
o        Who Will Save the World? The Mighty Groundhogs by the Groundhogs is released on United Artists and reaches number eight in the UK albums chart. It stays in the chart for nine weeks. The album cover is designed by Marvel Comics artist Neil Adams of 'Spiderman' fame.
o        Hogwash by the Groundhogs is released on United Artists. Clive Brooks joins the group from Egg.
o        It Never Rains In Southern California the first album by Albert Hammond is released. His second album is The Free Electric Band.
o        Bulletproof the first album by Hard Stuff is released on Purple Records. The band are John Du Cann, John Gustafson and Paul Hammond.
o        Doremi Farsolatido the third album by Hawkwind is released on United Artists.
o        Home, the second album by Home, is released on CBS. The album includes Dreamer. The group is Mick Stubbs guitar and vocals, Laurie Wisefield guitar, Cliff Williams bass and Mick Cook drums.

o        Thick as a Brick, the fifth album by Jethro Tull, with Martin Barre on guitar, is released on Island.
o        Living In the Past by Jethro Tull is released on Island.  
o        Kingdom Come, the second album by Arthur Brown’s Kingdom Come, is released.
o        Everybody's in Showbiz - Everybody's a Star, the twelfth album by the Kinks, is released on RCA.
o        Iceberg, the first solo album by Deke Leonard, is released on United Artists.

o        Live at the Padget Rooms Penarth, the fifth album by Man, is released on United Artists.
o        Manfred Mann's Earth Band the first album by Manfred Mann's Earth Band is released on Philips.
o        Glorified Magnified the second by Manfred Mann's Earth Band is released on Philips. 
o        Headkeeper, the second solo album by Dave Mason, is released on Island.
o        Seventh Sojourn, the eighth album by the Moody Blues, is released on Threshold.
o        All the Young Dudes the fifth album by Mott The Hoople is released on CBS.
o        Message from the Country, the fourth and final album by the Move, is released on Harvest.
o        Exercises the second album by Nazareth is released on Mooncrest-Mountain.
o        A Tab in the Ocean, the second album by Nektar, is released on Bacillus/Bellaphon in Germany.
o        Autumn 67 - Spring 68 compilation album, the sixth album by the Nice, is released on Charisma Perspective.
o        Back to Front album by Gilbert O’Sullivan is released.
o        Portrait of Donny album by Donny Osmond is released.

o        What a Bunch of Sweeties the second album by Pink Fairies is released on Polydor.
o        In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the sixth album by Procol Harum, is released on Chrysalis.
o        Self, the fourth album by Quintessence, is released on RCA.
o        Indweller, the fifth album by Quintessence, is released on RCA.
o        Lou Reed, the first album by Lou Reed, is recorded in the UK for RCA. Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman play on the album.
o        Transformer, the second album by Lou Reed, is recorded in the UK and produced by David Bowie for RCA. The album includes Walk on the Wild Side and Perfect Day.
o        Exile on Main Street, the eleventh album by the Rolling Stones, is released on Rolling Stones Records.
o        Roxy Music the first album by Roxy Music is released on Island.

o        Never a Dull Moment, the fourth album by Rod Stewart, is released on Mercury.
o        Lifeboat, the second album by the Sutherland Brothers Band, is released on Island.
o        A Space in Time, the seventh album by Ten Years After, is released on Chrysalis.

o        Shades of a Blue Orphanage, the second album by Thin Lizzy, is released on Decca. Eric Bell plays guitar on the album.
o        You Are the Music, We're Just the Band, the third album by Trapeze, is released on Threshold. The group is Glenn Hughes vocals, bass/ Mel Galley guitar/ Dave Holland drums. Geoff Barton, in Classic Rock magazine, gives the album 5/5 stars. 
o        Coming On Again, the third album by Tucky Buzzard, is released on Hispavox.
o        The Christmas Message single is issued to members of the T. Rex fan club on a flexidisc.
o        Flying, the second album by UFO, is released on Decca.
o        Demons and Wizards the fourth album by Uriah Heep is released on Bronze.
o        Magician's Birthday the fifth album by Uriah Heep is released on Bronze.
o        20 Star Tracks by Various is released.

·         Marcella by the Beach Boys only reaches 110 in the US singles chart.
·         Beck, Bogert and Appice is formed.
·         Lou Robin becomes Johnny Cash's manager, to 2003.
·         Bob Gaudio elects to leave The Four Seasons group, and adopts a Brian Wilson-style role as their off-the-road composer and producer. The Seasons sign with Berry Gordy’s Motown label. 
·         It Never Rains in Southern California by Albert Hammond, with lyrics by Mike Hazlewood, reaches number 5 in the US singles chart.
·         Chaka Khan joins Rufus. She takes the African name, Chaka, meaning 'woman of fire', from her involvement with the Black Panthers.
·         American Trilogy, written by Mickey Newbury, is a hit for Elvis Presley.
·         Pavlov’s Dog is formed in St. Louis, Missouri. 
·         James Taylor is married to Carly Simon, to 1983.
·         Everybody Rejoice by Luther Vandross features in The Wiz.
·         Across (Womack/Jackson) track by Bobby Womack.
