British and American Music Events/ Albums of 1971

1971 GB MUSIC

·         Arthur Brown, East of Eden and Colosseum headline at Reading Festival.
·         Catherine Howe’s first album is released on RCA. She goes on to tour with and open shows for Chris de Burgh, David Soul, Randy Edelman and Andy Fairweather-Lowe.
·         Mick Jagger marries Bianca in St. Tropez. Patrick Lichfield is the photographer.  
·         Fog on the Tyne by Lindisfarne, released in 1970 on Charisma, is the biggest-selling British album of 1971.
·         Ian MacDonald contributes regularly to the New Musical Express.
·         John and Beverley Martyn move from London to Hastings. Their first daughter Mhaire is born. Beverley stays at home to look after the children, while John has a run of solo albums through the decade.
·         Hank Marvin moves to Australia with his second wife Carole and their two children. Marvin has six children by his two wives (2004).
·         10cc are formed.
·         Robin Nash is a TOTP producer to 1980. John Lennon performs Instant Karma live on the programme.
·         Ozzy Osbourne marries his first wife Thelma.
·         Cliff Richard becomes involved with the Festival of Light organised by Mary Whitehouse, Lord Longford and Malcolm Muggeridge.
·         Maggie May by Rod Stewart is a number one single in the UK and the US. Every Picture Tells a Story is also a number one album in the UK and US.
·         Model Dee Harrington is Rod Stewart's fiancee, to 1975.
·         Funny Funny is the first of Sweet's 15 hit singles. It is written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, and is produced by Phil Wainman. Brian Connolly is backed by session musicians.
·         Tony Tyler joins the New Musical Express.
·         Pork, an Andy Warhol play starring Jayne County, is staged in the UK.
·         When Olivia Newton-John leaves Bruce Welch, he attempts suicide with barbiturates and brandy. He cancels the milk and newspapers, but forgets about the window cleaner, who finds him. Welch is in hospital for three months.
·         Lets See Action single by The Who is released.

o        Master of Reality by Black Sabbath is released on Vertigo.
o        Hunky Dory album by David Bowie is released on RCA. The album includes Changes, Oh You Pretty Things and Life On Mars.
o        Stretching Out album by the Alan Bown Set is released on Island.
o        Budgie the first album by Budgie is released on MCA.
o        Colosseum Live, the fourth album by Colosseum, is released on Bronze.
o        Second Album, the second album by Curved Air, is released on Warner Bros. It contains Back Street Luv.

o        Fireball, the sixth album by Deep Purple Mark II, is released on Harvest.
o        Sing Children Sing the first album by Lesley Duncan is released on CBS.
o        The Electric Light Orchestra, the first album by the Electric Light Orchestra, is released on Harvest.
o        Long Player, the second album by the Faces (Rod Stewart), is released on Warner Bros.
o        A Nod's as Good as a Wink . . . to a Blind Horse, the third album by the Faces (Rod Stewart), is released on Warner Bros.
o        Angel Delight, the sixth album by Fairport Convention, is released on Island.
o        Babbacombe Lee, the seventh album by Fairport Convention, is released on Island.
o        Fearless, the third album by Family, marks John Wetton’s arrival in the band.
o        The Original Fleetwood Mac, the sixth album by Fleetwood Mac, is released on CBS. The line-up is Peter Green guitar, vocals/ Jeremy Spencer slide guitar, vocals/ John McVie bass/ Mick Fleetwood drums.
o        Future Games, the seventh album by Fleetwood Mac, is released on Reprise. The line-up is Bob Welch guitar, vocals/ Danny Kirwan guitar, vocals/ Christine Perfect keyboards, vocals/ John McVie bass/ Mick Fleetwood drums.
o        Free Live, the fifth album by Free, is released on Island.

o        Rory Gallagher, the first album by Rory Gallagher, is released on Polydor.
o        Deuce, the second album by Rory Gallagher, is released on Polydor.
o        Nursery Cryme, the third album by Genesis, is released on Charisma.
o        Gentle Giant, the first album by Gentle Giant, is released on Vertigo.
o        Gravy Train, the first album by Gravy Train, is released on Vertigo. 
o        Ballad Of a peaceful Man, the second album by Gravy Train, is released on Vertigo. 
o        Split Part Two/ Split Part Three and Split Part One/ Split Part Four/ Cherry Red/ A Year in the Life the seventh and eighth singles by the Groundhogs are released. The Groundhogs tour with the Rolling Stones. Glyn Johns, who is recording the Stones, records one of the Groundhogs sets and Mick Jagger presents Tony with the tapes. These are used to make 100 copies of a promotional album for the United States, Live at Leeds.
o        Nursery Cryme the third album by Genesis is released on Charisma.
o        In Search of Space the second album by Hawkwind is released on United Artists.
o        Pause for a Hoarse Horse, the first album by Home, is released on CBS.
o        What a Beautiful Place, the first album by Catherine Howe, is released on the independent label Reflection.

o        Aqualung, the fourth album by Jethro Tull, with Martin Barre on guitar, is released on Island.  
o        Galactic 200 Dossier, the first album by Arthur Brown’s Kingdom Come, is released.
o        Percy, the tenth album by the Kinks, is released on Pye.
o        Muswell Hillbillies, the eleventh album by the Kinks, is released on RCA.  
o        Led Zeppelin IV by Led Zeppelin is released on Atlantic.
o        Imagine album by John Lennon is released on Apple. It contains the title track and Jealous Guy. Klaus Vormann is the bass guitar player on the album.

o        Bless the Weather, the third album by John Martyn, is released on Island.
o        Ram, by Paul and Linda McCartney, the second album by Paul McCartney without the Beatles, is released on Apple. It includes Uncle Albert and Admiral Halsey, Heart of the Country, Back Seat of My Car. 
o        McGuinness Flint, the first album by McGuinness Flint, is released on Capitol.
o        Happy Birthday Ruthie, the second album by McGuinness Flint, is released on Capitol.
o        Same Thing On Their Minds album by Jo-Anne Kelly and Tony McPhee is released.
o        Every Good Boy Deserves a Favour, the seventh album by the Moody Blues, is released on Threshold.
o        Wild Life, the third album by Mott the Hoople, is released on Island.
o        Brain Capers, the fourth album by Mott the Hoople, is released on Island.
o        Nazareth the first album by Nazareth is released on Mooncrest-Mountain.

o        Saturday Morning Pictures, the third album by Stray, is released.
o        Indelibly Stamped the second album by Supertramp is released on A&M.
o        The Sutherland Brothers Band, the first album by the Sutherland Brothers Band, is released on Island.
o        Thin Lizzy, the first album by Thin Lizzy, is released on Decca. Eric Bell plays guitar on the album.
o        Welcome to the Canteen, the fifth album by Traffic, is released on Island.
o        Low Spark of the High Heeled Boys, the sixth album by Traffic, is released on Island.
o        A Third Of a Lifetime the first album by Three Man Army is released. Drummers include Buddy Miles, Carmine Appice and Mike Kellie.
o        Tucky Buzzard, the first album by Tucky Buzzard, is released on Capitol. The group is Jimmy Henderson vocals, Terry Taylor guitar, Paul Kendrick guitar vocals, Nick Graham keyboards, David Brown bass, Paul Francis drums, Chris Johnson drums
o        Swarm Slash, the second album by Tucky Buzzard, is released on Capitol.
o        UFO, the first album by UFO, is released on Decca. The original guitarist is Mick Bolton and the album is produced by the song writing team of Guy Fletcher and Doug Flett, best known for their work with Cliff Richard.
o        Salisbury the second album by Uriah Heep is released on Vertigo.
o        Look at Yourself the third album by Uriah Heep is released on Bronze.
o        When You Are a King single by White Plains is released.
o        Who's Next, the sixth album by the Who, is released on Track.
o        Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy, the seventh album by the Who is released on Track. 
o        Changes the first non-classical album by John Williams is released. The musicians include John Williams guitar, Herbie Flowers bass, Tristan Fry drums and Francis Monkman keyboards.

o        Wild Life, the first album by Wings (Paul McCartney), is released on Apple.
o        Pilgrimage, the second album by Wishbone Ash, is released on MCA.
o        Hiroshima album by Wishful Thinking is released on B&C. The band is John Franklyn lead guitar, Kevin Scott lead vocals, Tony Collier bass and Brian Allen drums. All of the songs are written by Dave Morgan. The album is recorded at Chappell Recording Studio, London, and produced by Lou Reizner.

o        Fragile, the fourth album by, Yes is released on Atlantic.
o        Live at the Fillmore East June 1971 by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention is released on Reprise.

1971 US MUSIC

·         Blue Cheer split.
·         Louis Armstrong dies at his home in New York.
·         Brothers Ron and Russell Mael form Sparks in Los Angeles.
·         R. A. Moog Inc's lack of a sound business infrastructure and competition from other firms, such as ARP, forces Robert Moog to sell the company and its name to the entrepreneur Bill Waytena in exchange for the relief of debts of over $250,000. The company later becomes Moog Music.
·         Jim Morrison leaves The Doors, for a lengthy rest, and goes to live in Paris.
·         Stephen Schwartz of Godspell is Most Promising Composer.

o        Killer by Alice Cooper is released on Warner Bros. It includes Under My Wheels and Dead Babies.
o        If Only I Could Remember My Name solo album by David Crosby is released on Atlantic.
o        Surf's Up, the seventeenth album by the Beach Boys, is released on Stateside. It includes A Day in the Life of a Tree, with lyrics by Jack Riley, and the title track.
o        Blue Oyster Cult, the first album by Blue Oyster Cult, is released on CBS. The album includes Stairway to the Stars.
o        Manna, the third album by Bread, is released on Elektra.
o        Byrdmaniax, the tenth album by the Byrds, is released on CBS.
o        One Way . . . or Another, the second album by Cactus (Bogart and Appice), is released on Atlantic.
o        A Man in Black, the forty-second album by Johnny Cash, is released.
o        International Superstar, the forty-third album by Johnny Cash, is released.
